Hair Wash Day: How to Properly Wash your Hair (especially curly hair)

Updated: Feb 25

Being natural is like a job that gets more difficult the more your hair grows. It’s like that senior project that you work each day to perfect. Keeping your hair clean and moisturized takes a lot of patience. It’s like you have a whole baby up there to raise and nurture into maturity.

In this guide, I will teach you how to properly give that “baby” a bath:

There are a lot of different hair textures. Among the most difficult ones to deal with are 4b and 4c. For people with curly and kinky hair (men with a lot of hair included), it is not good to wash your hair every week as that makes it weak and causes hair breakage. Washing your hair every two weeks is most plausible. Now, let’s get into hair wash day!

Before you wash your hair, you should put 2-4 drops of hair oil in a small bottle. Put the bottle inside of a bowl of hot water and let it sit there for 5-7 minutes. After the time is up, let the oil cool down a little to avoid burning yourself. Then start massaging it into your roots to the end of your hair. After that, cover your hair with a shower cap for 30 minutes.

After the 30 minutes is up, rinse out the oil from your hair and add shampoo. Gently massage the shampoo into your hair. Shampoo is known to dry out your hair if used too often, which is why sometimes you should use a co-wash conditioner instead of shampoo.

Add conditioner to your hair. Massage and comb your hair then put a shower cap on for 3-5 minutes. Put some music while you’re at it to keep you distracted from the long hours of washing your hair.

After leaving your conditioner on for 3-5 minutes, rinse it out. Section your hair and put your deep conditioner on every section. Make sure you comb your hair again, put a shower cap on and on top of that, put a hot cap on for 40 minutes. It is really good to use an aloe vera and oil base deep conditioner.

Step five: LOC METHOD

This step is probably the most important step when it comes to taking care of your hair. After your 40 minutes is up, rinse your hair with cold water (helps keep moisture locked into your hair and helps hair be able to breath and grow). Always use warm water/cold water to wash your hair. After rinsing your hair, dry it just a little and add on your leave-in conditioner. ALWAYS follow the LOC method with stands for liquid, oil, and cream. After your leave-in conditioner, add some oil into your scalp and massage it into your hair. I myself use Haitian black castor oil which makes my hair feel amazing and grow 3x faster. Then, apply a hair cream or moisturizer into each section of your hair evenly. All that is left is styling your hair, and voila!

Washing your hair properly is a very long process, which is why it is very important to have a day dedicated to it when you have nothing else to do. This way, you won’t have to rush and skip crucial steps! Don’t worry, you got this!
